New look, the same Virginia photography you know and love.

For the next few weeks, we will be featuring a few of our favorite local places to visit. We LOVE Virginia!!!

Historic Yorktown

In 2002, when we first moved to the Tidewater Region of Virginia, we were so incredibly excited to see so many historic places that we had read about.  We love history, especially when it is about our great nation.  Historic Yorktown is a peaceful place where you can play in the water and enjoy the beautiful view.   July 2003 was our first Fourth of July here in Virginia, and we celebrated by going to Yorktown to watch the fireworks.  It was surreal to experience the exploding fireworks here, in Yorktown, the place where British General Charles Cornwallis formally surrendered, with help from France, which finalized the American Revolution.    The Moore House, where the surrender was signed on October 19, 1781, still exists today, along with many other houses and buildings.  Amazing!  How intriguing it is to walk in a place where British, American, and French soldiers walked and fought.  It creates a tangible experience of Revolutionary War history, which is one of the many wonderful things we love about our town.

Understandably, Historic Yorktown is also one of my favorite locations to photograph families and high school seniors.   I absolutely love to photograph beach portrait sessions at Yorktown Beach because of the variety of settings at this particular beach and because of the beautiful light as sunset or sunrise begins.   The jetty, the pier, the Coleman Bridge, the green beach grass swaying in the gentle breeze, and the sun filtering such lovely light behind the clouds provide the ultimate storybook location!

Recently, I had the privilege of photographing a really sweet family on Yorktown Beach.  They were so easy to work with and really did a fantastic job during their Family Portrait Session!   I loved their choice of sand and sea colors against the beautiful beach canvas.  As I photographed them, I could picture what we will eventually see as parents as our teenagers become adults and get married.  That is the part of the journey this family is on, and I enjoyed being able to document this day when they were all together as a family.  Combined with their amazing smiles and the perfect weather, it was a wonderful day.
